Ford Falcon Ignition Problems

Ignition issues with the Ford Falcon and Ford Territory are a common problem we see with vehicles manufactured between 2002 and 2008. The problem often presents as a lack of the elastic-like resistance usually felt when turning on a car ignition. The car does not start and no lights turn on when the Accessories notch is reached when turning the key. We often hear the problem described as:-

  • The key is turning loosely or freely in the ignition
  • No pressure or usual resistance when turning key
  • Key not clicking into position from off to accessories to start
  • The barrel ‘not turning’ or ‘playing up’
  • The key is not starting car
  • There is no resistance and no lights come on when the key is turned in the ignition
  • Ignition problem

Have a look at the video of the problem below.

Which Ford Falcon and Ford Territory vehicles are affected?

The Ford BA Falcon (2002-2005), the BF Falcon (2005-2008) Falcon, the Ford SX Territory (2004-2005) and SY Territory (2005-2008) appear to be the vehicles most affected by this issue. Series’ produced after 2008 do not appear to have the issue, indicating a possible design fault in the vehicles of this time period.

Good news! There is a solution.

Often people will think they need a new barrel, new ignition or even a new steering column to fix the problem. Luckily this is not the case. The ignition can be repaired and restored back to full function with your existing keys. The job can take anywhere from half an hour to 1.5 hours depending on the vehicle and level of damage inside the ignition.

Video 1 shows the common Ford Falcon ignition problem. No resistance, no clicks into positions, no dashboard lights come on with turning and the car does not start.

Video 2 shows the ignitions after repair: fully functional again! Clicking into each position, resistance normal and starting the car as it should.
